The Week Debuts New Cover Design

The Week quietly debuted a new cover design for its June 26th issue. The design brings the cover in line with its UK and Australian versions while also leveraging some of the newsstand magic the magazine has outside of the U.S. where it is primarily a subscription-driven publication.
Entrepreneur Editors Ask for Buyouts

Four editors asked for and received buyouts at Entrepreneur magazine. VP Ryan Shae said no layoffs were planned, but we offered them a nice severance package and parted ways.
Hachette Reorgs Auto Brands Into New Group

Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. announced today that its reorganizing its automotive brands under the Jumpstart online network. Called Jumpstart Automotive Group, the new entity follows a similar structure set up for the womens and shelter titles, and gives Car and Driver and Road & Track managers cross-platform oversight.
Vibe Media Group to shut down

Vibe Media Group (VMG), parent company of Vibe and the newly launched The Most Mag, will shutdown at 8pm tonight, June 30. All properties, including its Web sites, will be discontinued. Vibe, the flagship magazine, had a total paid and verified circulation 817,825 as of December 31 a slight drop from a high of 879,072 in 2007. Per MRI, Vibes readership was split evenly between men and women, and median reader age was around 29.
Readers Digest pulls back print, focuses on digital

Readers Digest is reducing its rate base and frequency as it redirects resources to new media and digital initiatives worldwide. The US edition of the magazine will slowly trim its rate base from 8 million to 5.5 million over the course of 18 months, starting with the February 2010 issue. Cuts will be focused on less profitable and less loyal subscriptions.
Popular Science Develops Interactive 3D Cover

The July issue of Bonniers Popular Science features a 3D cover that allows readers to log onto the magazines Web site and interact with an animated hologram. The magazine utilized “augmented reality firm Metaios Web application software, called Unifeye Viewer, to make the 3D system work.

FamilyFun plays up Disney connection, launches custom pub division

FamilyFun magazine is rebranding and launching a line of spin-off products and a custom publishing line in a rare growth push for media companies in this economy. The moms- and kids-focused monthly will be known as Disney FamilyFun, after its parent company, as of the August issue. The company's magazine publishing division is also changing its name, to Disney FamilyFun Group, all in an effort to make the most of combined brand power of Disney and the 2.1 million-circulation FamilyFun.
Jazz Times Ceases Publication

Jazz Times, a magazine that has celebrated the genre since 1970, appears to be on the brink of death. In a note posted on its Web site, the magazine has suspended publication and has furloughed the bulk of its staff while it finalizes a sale of its assets.
Hearst to Sell Stake in E-Reader Company

Hearst Interactive Media has agreed to sell its stake in E Ink the electronic paper display firm that developed the technology for Amazon’s Kindle and the Sony Reader to Taiwan-based e-paper display module supplier Prime View International. Prime View said it agreed to buy out all of E Ink’s investors for approximately $215 million.
Playboy Names New CEO

Playboy Enterprises appointed Scott Flanders president and CEO of Irvine, California-based media company Freedom Communications chief executive and to its board of directors. Flanders replaces interim CEO Jerome Kern, who took over late last year when Christie Hefner longtime CEO and daughter of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner stepped down.
Bonnier Acquires Five Hachette Titles
