Following the announcement earlier this week that it is realigning its U.S. business operations, the Readers Digest Association is reorganizing RDA Interactive to support the companys global initiatives and corporate priorities associated with the new U.S. affinities. A number of staffing changes, including layoffs, were associated with the transition.

About three weeks after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, RDA has announced a realignment of its U.S. business operations, with the creation of the U.S. Affinities and Emerging Businesses divisions. According to RDA president and CEO Mary Berner, the new divisions are designed to enable us to bring our U.S. affinities closer together under one organization to drive growth and efficiency.

Consumer magazine circulation through the first half was stable with subscription gains offsetting newsstand declines. Thats the overarching point of The Full Story on Magazine Circulation Vitality, a new white paper released by the Magazine Publishers of America. Bruce Wasserstein, who was considered by some to be the front runner in the bidding for McGraw-Hills BusinessWeek, is said to have decided against making a final bid for the magazine. His exit leaves late entry Bloomberg as the favorite among the magazines remaining potential suitors.

Bonnier Redesigns Former Hachette Titles

About two months after acquiring five titles from Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., enthusiast magazine publisher Bonnier Corp. is breathing new life into a number of those titles in the form of major redesigns. So far, the publisher has redesigned Boating and Sound + Vision, and has plans to give American Photo and Popular Photography new looks, too.

Hearst to Reduce Esquires Frequency, Raise Newsstand Price

Hearst-published mens magazine Esquire is making a few adjustments for 2010. Starting next year, the title will reduce its frequency from 12 issues to 11 with a June/July double issue. In addition, the newsstand cover price will be increased by 30 percent to $4.99.

Scientific American to Slash Rate Base 20 Percent

Following its merger with book publisher Macmillans Nature Publishing Group last fall, Scientific American has reduced the rate base for its U.S. edition from 575,000 to 450,000 more than 20 percent drop.

Readers Digest to File for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection

The Readers Digest Association today said it has reached an agreement in principle with a majority of its senior secured lenders on terms of a restructuring plan to reduce the companys debt from $2.2 billion to $550 million. As part of the agreement, RDA expects to implement the restructuring under a voluntary pre-packaged Chapter 11 filing in U.S. bankruptcy court.
